Over several months in 2017 Jessica Reznicek and Ruby Montoya, two Catholic workers, carried out multiple acts of sabotage and arson in order to stop construction of the controversial Dakota Access pipeline. Inspired by the anti-nuclear Plowshares Movement, which used nonviolent direct action to target nuclear warheads and military installations, the two moved up and down the pipeline’s length, disabling equipment, destroying valves, and delaying construction for weeks.
