FLAGS
In the immediate wake of September 11th, 2001, crass merchandise targeting our presumed sense of national pride flooded the checkout aisles at drugstores, gas stations, and grocery stores. Soon thereafter “patriotic” magnets and cheap plastic flags (most made in China) adorned the bumpers of cars all across America.
It was especially poignant several months later – given a national climate of anxiety and dissent over an increasingly unpopular war – to find these same emblems of strength and unity scattered, faded and tattered, in ditches and sewer grates.
