My recent work examines the conditions that impede the ability of life on Earth to flourish indefinitely, and the role of art in understanding such conditions.
Among the foremost impediments to our sustained existence is a tale we tell ourselves - that humankind is the culmination of evolution, and that the vast riches of this world exist solely for our benefit. This myth of human sovereignty is destructively manifest in our industrialized agriculture, sprawling urban and suburban developments, the consumption and eradication of other creatures, and the suppression of any natural expression other than our own.
Art does not remove such impediments...art recognizes them, frames them, and reveals them. By raising consciousness, art creates the conditions for empathy. Empathy creates the conditions for action. Action leads to change.
